About Katie Rose Johnston

Working from a small garden studio on the outskirts of Glasgow, I create sculptural ceramics that are designed to bring attention to the objects and collections we hold close. My work is often inspired through exploring the world around me, from the organic forms of nests, seedpods and microorganisms in pond water, to museum displays, experimenting with found materials and kitchen byproducts. Learning how to Woodfire an Anagama kiln or harvest wild clay has shaped the work I create today, alongside collecting, which is at the heart of my creative process. In the studio, tissue paper-lined boxes hold a wealth of fossils, rocks and mudlarked objects, collected from adventures across Scotland. With these objects beside me, I can playfully combine patterns and shapes found in the natural world with the imaginary forms in my mind.

After graduating with a degree in Sculpture from The Glasgow School of Art in 2017, my work has since been exhibited with Bard in Leith, Craft Scotland, 1000 Vases at Paris Design Week and has been featured in Hidden Scotland, Milk Decoration and In Her Studio Magazine.
