The Comet Espresso Cup and Saucer are inspired by watching comets in the early morning skies of Japan, Iceland, Norway and Scotland. Though designed for serving espresso and petit fours, they can also be used for storing precious collections or displaying tealights at the table. I'm delighted to share this first glimpse of the collection with you, after many tests and prototypes in the studio since returning from Japan last year.
Each cup and saucer has been formed in my hand, pinching out their forms from balls of a stoneware clay. Wedged through with red iron oxide, the clay turns a deep, nut brown under a clear glaze. There is a slight marbling on some of the vessels, adding to the galactic feeling of the collection, and the foot of both the cup and saucer are carved by hand. White stoneware clay has been pressed into geometric scores across the surface of each object in the collection, which - when the excess clay is subsequently scraped away - reveals neat lines like comets zipping across the surface. Each saucer is an individual shape and size from the next, alongside the individual nature of the scored design. The interior of each vessel is coated in a white, glossy glaze that mirrors the comets on the exterior.
