Inspired by a termite mound cross section in the Hunterian Museum, the Nest for Curiosities is a functional sculpture designed to hold your most precious collections.
The Nest for Curiosities is slab built from terracotta crank clay and, over the course of several sessions, the curves of each compartment is worked into by pinching and smoothing with my fingertips. It's a few hours of quiet work, stopping only when the form is delicate and has flow. Once bisque fired, the piece is then coated with black slip which is weathered and removed with a paintbrush and sponge before its final glaze firing.
